Exhuma Director Jang Jae-hyun Next Project: Korean Vampire Film After Kim Go-eun Shaman Hit

Following the massive success of supernatural thriller Exhuma, director Jang Jae-hyun has revealed exciting plans for his next project—a Korean vampire film inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

No Exhuma Sequel—Director Wants to Evolve

In an exclusive interview with Screen Daily in May 2024, Jang confirmed there will be no Exhuma sequel or spinoff featuring the beloved characters played by shaman Kim Go-eun, geomancer Choi Min-sik, and mortician Yoo Hae-jin.

“I have to continue to evolve,” the director stated, emphasizing his commitment to creating something entirely new rather than capitalizing on Exhuma‘s box office triumph of over 11.9 million admissions.

Korean Vampire Movie Set Against Orthodox Church Backdrop

Director Jang revealed his vampire project, tentatively titled Vampir, will blend Korean horror elements with classic vampire mythology. The film will be set against the backdrop of the Greek-Russian Orthodox Church—a unique setting for Korean cinema.

“I’m writing in my brain every day something very, very strange,” Jang told Screen Daily. “I want to make a vampire movie in Korea.” The director added that the screenplay alone would take approximately two years to complete, with the full production timeline expected to span around four years.

Building on Exhuma’s Occult Universe

The vampire film will expand the supernatural universe Jang established through previous works including The Priests (2015) and Svaha: The Sixth Finger (2019). The director plans to incorporate horror elements rather than traditional vampire action tropes, promising another genre-defining experience for Korean cinema fans worldwide.

Exhuma’s Global Success

Exhuma became a cultural phenomenon, breaking records as the highest-grossing Korean film in Vietnam and Indonesia.

The film starring Kim Go-eun as shaman Hwa-rim and Lee Do-hyun as exorcist Bong-gil attracted international attention for its realistic portrayal of Korean shamanism and exhumation rituals.

The supernatural mystery grossed over $95 million worldwide and became the first Korean occult horror film to surpass 10 million admissions domestically.

Production for director Jang Jae-hyun’s vampire project is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, according to recent reports.
